A man returned home to find firefighters putting out a blaze in his home.
Firefighters were called to the block of flats in Masefield Gardens, Crowthorne, on Saturday night.
The other residents in the flats had been evacuated and were watching the firefighters work when the owner of the ground floor property arrived home.
A spokesman for Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said he was "shocked".
He said: "Three fire engines, using four breathing apparatus and two hose reels were used to tackle the fire.
"As the property was empty we had to force entry.
"The fire was contained in one room."
The cause of the fire was not known.
