Despite not ‘rising’ to the challenge as usual, Charters student Martha Collison still managed to secure her place in next week’s doughnut-based quarter-final.

Six amateur bakers battled to stay in the competition in last night’s episiode (September 18), with the judges putting their sweet and savoury pastry skills to the test.

After some soggy savoury parcels, the six bemused contestants were faced with three-and-a-half hours to make a Breton cake called ‘Kouign Amann’, which none of them had even heard of.

After presenting 36 eclairs to the judges, curly-haired Kate was unfortunately eliminated, but builder Richard Burr was a 'choux-in' and awarded Star Baker for an impressive third time.

Although a close-call, Martha will be back on our screens next Wednesday.
