Members of ‘Friends of Speedway’ will honour the popular California Poppies Speedway team from the 1950 with another family fun day.

The event takes place at California Country Park near the site where some of the sport’s greatest names once raced in Poppies colours.

Two former California champions - Eric Hockaday and Jimmy Gleed - will be attending this weekend alongside New Zealand star Bobby Andrews and Barry Duke, Bikes will be started at various times during the family event, and there will be an impressive display of some of the finest, vintage machines from the past.

There will also be a guided walk where enthusiasts can see the original children’s paddling pool from the holiday camp days which has been cleared by Friends of Speedway members.

In addition, speedway fans can stand on the concrete start and finish line with marked out starting boxes - the only surviving one of its kind.

The California Poppies team raced for the last time in 1957 and ‘Friends of Speedway’ would like to hear from enthusiasts who owns memorabilia of the California Poppies or speedway in general.

Organiser Stuart Towner said: “We are hopeful celebrity guests of international fame can attend along with the family of Poppies captain, Ron Sharp.

“Anyone with memorabilia or memories should make themselves known to any of the Friends of Speedway members bearing their name badges.

“We are still searching for any cine film not only of the racing, but of the country park in general.

“It is a never-ending search for items of interest of all the different activities that went on in the park, not only speedway.” California Country Park also offers a wealth of historic interest in itself, plus a cafeteria with toilets.

The speedway display will be open from 11am until 4pm. Entry is free.
