The charity – set up in memory of Ascot schoolboy Sebastian Gates – supports severely ill children and their families in Berkshire and surrounding counties through its holiday home and a range of other services.
When I was first approached to take on the Bracknell Half Marathon a few weeks ago, it was something I met with apprehension.
I’m not someone that finds committing themselves to a long training schedule something of a breeze.
I had tried in the past to run regularly in a lacklustre attempt to get fit. It never worked.
However, with a big race to aim for and my pride at stake, I am more determined than ever to succeed.
When I set out for my first run, in as long as I could remember, the thought of ever running 13.1 miles on gruelling tarmac certainly filled me with dread.
After struggling my way round a three-mile route and pausing for air about five times, I feared my training was crumbling before it had even begun. The following three days, when I felt as if I couldn’t even walk five metres, were casting doubts in my mind.
Two weeks on and it is a totally different story.
I’m now running five miles four days a week, and I don’t feel like collapsing on my doorstep after each one.
Now I feel more comfortable and happy in my running, I’m looking to increase the distance week by week.
Dare I say it, but I’m even enjoying it.
I’ve chosen Sebastian’s Action Trust because in my six months as a reporter I’ve worked closely with the charity and really admire the work it does. It is well known all across Bracknell, Wokingham and Ascot, and has helped a lot of severely ill children and their families over the past decade.
I’m not just running to prove to myself that I can actually stick to some form of exercise, but to give a little something to the charity to help it carry on the important work it does in the community.
It would be great if you could support me and this brilliant charity as I push my body to the limits.
