PUPILS and parents will ditch their cars to walk, cycle or scoot to school for a national initiative this week.

The annual Walk to School Week started today (Monday) with youngsters from St Mary's School, in Yew Tree Road, Slough, taking part (see video).

This year's event in Slough will be space themed with children who walk, cycle or scoot to school receiving a star to add to a wall chart in their classroom.

The winning school will then be presented with a trophy.

Ellie Ellwood, Bike It officer for charity Sustrans, said: "These are great ways to get out and enjoy the local area. Sustrans research shows that around half of children want to cycle or scoot to school but only 4% do. Walk to School Week is a fantastic way to try it out."

The initiative is organised by the charity and Slough Borough Council.

Parents and children planning on taking part are encouraged to visit the www.saferroads.org/advice for safety tips.
