A LOCAL football hero who suffered a heart attack while on holiday has come out of a coma.

The family of Tony Calvert, 48, from Crowthorne, were told to fear the worst by doctors after he was flown back to England from his holiday in Gran Canaria.

However, he defied doctors predictions and woke up and began talking on Monday.

His daughter, Holly, 23, said: "After being told Tony was unlikely to respond to any treatment he amazed us all and defied medical science by waking up and being able to interact with us.

"We are so delighted with this however it is apparent now that he will require intensive rehabilitation care in the future."

Mr Calvert, who managed Bracknell Town, Wokingham and Sandhurst and also played for Aldershot Town and Farnborough Town, suffered the heart attack at the beginning of last month.

Family and friends rallied round to raise £20,000 to fly Mr Calvert home.

A fundraising event is due to take place on May 18 at Aldershot Town and the family hoped people would continue to support the cause to help Mr Calvert's recovery.
