Call for fosterers in Berkshire to help care for abandoned pets

A CHARITY which cares for abandoned cats and dogs is appealing for help to rehome unwanted Christmas presents.

Battersea Dogs And Cats Home has had a large rise in animals abandoned at the home in Priest Hill, Old Windsor, since Christmas and is appealing for more foster carers to look after them.

They predict the increase - believed to be a result of people receiving pets as Christmas presents and neglecting them when returning to work - will continue until March.

Kaye Mughal, centre manager, said: "Puppies are always very cute, but many people forget they will soon need training. Once they start chewing shoes and lose their novelty value they are given up or discarded, leaving Battersea Old Windsor to pick up the pieces."

The home currently has 52 dog foster carers and hopes to find 15 more by March.

Fosterers care for animals in their homes while they recover from operations or to give them a break from kennel or cattery life.

Mrs Mughal added: "An increase in unwanted or abandoned pets understandably places a real pressure on Battersea Old Windsor.

"We hope Berkshire locals will be able to help us transform the fortunes of these animals by fostering, which is incredibly rewarding and can make a huge difference to the life of a dog or cat."

Fosterers will receive full training, all the food, equipment and medication their animal needs, reimbursement of travel expenses and advice and support from Battersea's foster co-ordinators.

The charity also confirmed the five English Bull Terriers who were dumped on New Year's Eve have all found new homes.

  This just goes to prove stupid people shouldn't breed; if they can't even look after pets (which is actually quite simple) they clearly shouldn't procreate. Let me guess, the highest demographic were from Whitley and the Katesgrove areas...

  We have a cat found abandoned on the road side, and from curiosity checked the Preloved website - where there are adverts for both puppies and kittens, some at very high asking prices. Typically, the sellers seemed to be small scale operators, and I wonder what happens to any unsold animals that get past the cute puppy/kitten stage and are more difficult to sell. Do these get dumped?
