A CHURCH is stepping up its fundraising campaign to raise £50,000 for roof repairs.
Holy Trinity Church in Bracknell town centre has already secured £50,000 but needs to find the same sum again towards repairing the Grade II-listed Victorian building. It has organised events including a concert and a quiz, and fundraising committee member Malcolm Taylor said: "It's a big shot. We are continuing to fundraise. We are just over half way there."
The Heritage Lottery Fund has offered the church £19,000 towards a £25,000 roof survey, then a further £78,000 towards the £170,000 cost of repairing the roofs over the main chancel and the south aisle. Some of the Welsh slate roofing on the 1851 building has become worn and needs replacing to prevent the roof starting to leak.
The church has secured grants from Berkshire Churches' Trust and Allchurches Trust and has benefited from fundraising events and donations.
Mr Taylor encouraged Bracknell people to support the appeal, saying: "It's the civic church. It's a church for all the community and it's one of the oldest buildings in Bracknell. It would be such a shame to see us not to be able to attempt to put a new roof on it."
The next fundraising event will be a concert at 7.30pm on Saturday, February 25, at the church in The Ring, with a glass of wine and performances by the church's choir.
Entry is free but there will be a retiring collection. There will also be an opportunity to sponsor slates in memory of a loved one.
At 7.30pm on Saturday, March 10, there will be a quiz at Langley Hall next to the church, with participants invited to bring food to share.
At 7.30pm on Saturday, April 21, there will be a pizza evening at Langley Hall will an auction of talents. Other plans include a Big Band Night at the Royal British Legion Club in the summer, plus an antiques valuation evening on September 15.
