SURPRISED pupils turned up to school to find their playground taken over by eight horses.

Schoolchildren and teachers at Newbold Adventist School, in Popeswood Road, Binfield, made the discovery on Tuesday, March 9, after a passer-by spotted the animals wandering down the road and herded them through the school gates. The owners arrived at 8.30am with a horse box, but it wasn't until 2pm that all the horses, who had escaped overnight from a field in Wokingham, were taken off the school grounds.

Headteacher, Patricia Eastwood, said: "The children were indoors all day.

"They enjoyed it, but they had to eat lunch in their classrooms.

"While it was a bit of fun, it has left quite a bit of clearing up to do. They did a fair bit of damage as one of the horses jumped out of the playground."

The police, veterinary services and RSPCA attended the incident and one horse had to be sedated.

She added: "One thing's for sure, when you turn up for work in the morning you never know what the day ahead will bring!"
