THE Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy tonight (Monday). Prince William was at the birth of their son, who is now third in the line to the throne, at St Mary's Hospital in London.
A bulletin signed by the Queen's gynaecologist was taken from the hospital to the palace under a police escort and then was displayed on an ornate easel in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.
The document said: "Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm today. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."
The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwell, Prince Harry and members of the Middleton family have been informed of the birth and are delighted with the news, the Palace said.
The Duchess of Cambridge - Kate Middleton as she was - grew up in Bucklebury, west Berkshire, and it is expected that she will be staying at her parents' home in the village.
Royal Borough mayor councillor Andrew Jenner said: ""I am delighted to learn of the safe arrival of this new member of the Royal Family.
"Every new baby brings its own special joy and, as a parent myself, I well remember the excitement and anticipation of having a new member of our family.
"The birth of this particular baby is of special importance to the entire nation and we share the Royal Family's pleasure on his very happy occasion.
"I am sure everyone in the borough will join with me in congratulating the proud new parents and sending them our sincere best wishes."
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead town crier, Chris Brown, added: "Congratulations to their Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the safe arrival of their son. It is great to welcome a new addition to the Windsor family."
Mr Brown will be at the Queen Victoria statue in Castle Hill, Windsor from 10.30am tomorrow to proclaim the announcement in front of Windsor Castle.
Prime Minister David Cameron said: "I'm delighted for the Duke and Duchess now their son has been born. The whole country will celebrate"
