YOUTH workers and volunteers are joining forces to bid for cash from a £190million government grant so they can improve facilities for young people in the area.

At a public meeting on Tuesday an action plan was drawn up by committee members and volunteers at The Wayz youth centre in Harmans Water, for the much needed improvements.

Formerly known as the Boys Club it was built in 1966 and is now in need of some love and attention.

Berkshire Association of Clubs for Young People (BACYP), who own the club, will put in an application for a grant to enable a new youth club to be built.

If the application is successful, BACYP will be able to start the plans and enlist the help of architects in March next year.

Callie Welch, a volunteer at The Wayz, said: "We feel that the club has seen better days and needs major work done.

"It needs to be modernised, toilets need to be refitted and the leak in the roof needs to be repaired.

Mike Carne, also a volunteer, said: "We are in charge of consulting young people as well as local residents about modernising the youth centre and making the needed improvements.

"We will be working hard to make this a reality."
