COUPLES who have been married for a combined total of 878 years renewed their vows during a world record-breaking attempt in Sandhurst.

The 29 couples who renewed their marriage vows at St Michael’s Church, Sandhurst.

A total of 29 couples took part in The Big Promise – a national event calling on people to renew their vows at the same time.

The event, at St Michael’s Church, in Lower Church Road, was organised by Karen Allen and Rebecca Brown.

They said: “The couples enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea followed by a very special service in the church which was beautifully decorated for the occasion.

“It was a truly splendid day. All the couples had a great time and were so complimentary about the event.”

All of the participants were treated to a celebration party with a ‘wedding breakfast’ including champagne, wedding cake, toasts and dancing following the service. The organisers added: “It was a very emotional day and so lovely to see recently married couples – young couples, couples with families, retired couples as well as two couples who had been married for 63 years all joining together to celebrate a total 878 years of wedded bliss.”

The Big Promise took

place across the UK on Saturday, February 8, at 5.15pm, as the centrepoint of Marriage Week. It aimed to break

the previous world record of 1,087 couples renewing their vows at the same time, which was set in Miami University, USA, in 2009. Churches from as far apart as the south coast of England to Inverness in Scotland took part in the record attempt.

Confirmation on whether the record attempt has been successful or not is expected to be made later this year.
