THE health trust that runs Broadmoor Hospital has been given permission by the Department of Health to move ahead with the next stage of its £298m redevelopment project.
West London Mental Health Trust (WLMHT)'s outline business case has been approved and it will now develop its full business case for submission to the strategic health authority NHS London in October 2012.
The trust has already received planning permission from Bracknell Forest Council to build a new hospital in the grounds of the existing 150-year-old one in Crowthorne.
Steve Shrubb, the trust's chief executive, said: "We're delighted with the Department of Health's decision and the opportunity the redevelopment presents to vastly improve high secure mental health services."
The trust hopes to complete the new 16-ward hospital with 234 beds by early 2017.
It would be funded by the trust, selling off surplus land - identified for possible housing use by the council - and government funding.
