A COMMUNITY space for the elderly undergoing refurbishment has been given a cash boost from a group representing the county’s businesses.

Sandhurst Day Centre, based in Yorktown Road, offers older people access to a facility which provides for their social needs and wellbeing.

Founded in 1974, its present building dates from 1988 and had been showing some signs recently of needing a makeover.

This was given a boost last year with a grant from the Aviva Community Fund, and now the Berkshire Business Network has helped to keep the work going with a further £500 donation that will go towards the redecoration of one of the main halls.

Handing over the cheque, Bracknell MP Dr Phillip Lee, president of the Berkshire Business Network, said: “The Sandhurst Day Centre performs an absolutely vital service for the older members of our community.

“As spending pressures increase on local authorities, it is only right that the local communities and corporations who do business in them, step up to the plate to ensure that they can continue with their work.

“I am pleased that the Berkshire Business Network, which is made up of companies from across the area, has been able to help in this way.”

The chairman of the centre’s trustees, Cllr Pauline McKenzie, said: “This centre was founded on the generosity and hard work of the local community and businesses.

“I am grateful to the current generation of businesses for continuing this tradition of support.”
