THE front doors of a building society were smashed after a suspected ram raid in Crowthorne.

In the early hours of Saturday, February 11 a Peugeot 306 crashed into the front doors of Nationwide in the High Street.

Nothing was taken and a man from Wokingham was arrested on suspicion of burglary, police said.

A passer-by, who preferred to remain anonymous, told the News: "It looked pretty bad, but I don't think they managed to take the ATM."

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police, said: "A 26-year-old man from Wokingham was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

"He was released on police bail until March 8."

It is the second ram raid incident at Nationwide in the village in the last four years after thieves used a digger to gain entry to the bank.

The busy road was closed in June 2013 while police investigated the incident in which the thieves got away.

It was not known how much cash, if any, was taken.

A JCB digger was left in the middle of the road while police carried out their inquiries.

Anyone with information should call 101.
