A DARTS fan may be on the oche for a Pride of Bracknell Award after being nominated for his work in arranging charity fundraising at games.

Steve Lane, chairman of the Binfield and Bracknell Men's Dart League, has raised about 3,750 for Thames Hospicecare over the past four years after a fellow darts player died from cancer and he wanted to do something to support other sufferers.

Mr Lane, from Wildridings, said: "I think Thames Hospicecare do a great job. We all know someone who's either got cancer or is going to have cancer is going to need it." Mr Lane, 39, manager of Protyre tyre fitting in Slough, and his wife will also be doing a sponsored 10km run in London on July 8 for the charity - which runs a hospice in Windsor and a day centre in Ascot - to support people with life-limiting illnesses.

He organises raffles and collections at darts games, mostly held at Hanworth and Crown Wood Social Clubs, in aid of the charity.

The former Easthampstead Park pupil said there is a very friendly and supportive feeling at the games and said: "I just love the atmosphere of darts." Mr Lane was put forward for the award by fellow darts enthusiast Karen Viney, who said: "I wanted to nominate him because he is never-ending in his strong determination for raising money for charity through darts competitions.

"There is nothing that Steve wouldn't do for you, even in his busy life as a manager at work and looking after his lovely family.

"He is an amazing person and deserves recognition for all his efforts for the charity fundraising that he does. There are many people within the league who would confirm what I have said but I think that everyone should know about his achievements hence entering him for this award." The Pride of Bracknell Awards celebrate people's achievements in community work, education, sport and more.

All nominations will go before a judging panel, then shortlisted nominees will be invited to an awards evening at Bracknell and Wokingham College on Friday, April 27.
