The crowds were entertained by the dancers from Bracknell and Wokingham’s OBJ Morris Dancers as well as meeting birds of prey and riding on the model steam train.

Bracknell town mayor Denise Hamilton helped organise the event alongside Bracknell Forest Council, Bracknell Homes and Bracknell in Bloom. She said: “We wanted to inspire a great day out for families. It’s half-term and it’s a lovely activity.

“There’s a parallel between what the children are doing here and what they’re doing in school. They see it in the real world and it becomes more relevant.

“It’s too hard to say what I enjoyed the most but this morning I was dancing with the Morris men and doing a little weaving.” Jocks Lane recreation ground saw about 1,000 people throughout the day as families enjoyed the activities and demonstrations on offer.

Evan Hurst was one of the engineers helping run miniaturised trains around the elevated tracks.

He said: “This is a special day we’re doing by invitation. The season really starts in April. We’re running both electric and steam locos today.” Cllr Chris Turrell said: “This has been one of our flagship events. The children’s play area and field are always popular.” Jocks Lane is investing in a new splash pad and resurfacing the tennis court in time for the Wimbledon surge in popularity.
