Residents of Jennett’s Park have been without a shop in the neighbourhood since people started moving in five years ago and despite promises a shop would be in place by Christmas, it has failed to materialise.

Last October it was announced Morrisons had agreed to operate it as a Morrisons Local store, with a number of flats on top. Despite delivery times and an alcohol licence agreed for the shop, no building work has begun.

Owners of the site Jennett’s Park Consortium — consisting of Persimmon Homes and Redrow — has been criticised for failing to deliver a shop until now, with more than 1,000 homes in the development.

Cllr Mary Temperton, of Great Hollands North ward, will pose a question at tonight’s full council meeting demanding a progress update on the shop.

She said: “The consortium has promised residents a shop for so long now and everyone is understandably getting very frustrated.

“Every other estate in Bracknell has a shop so I have no idea why this is taking so long. I just want to know what is happening because people need to know when it is definitely coming.

“I know it is not going to be somewhere you do your weekly shop but it will provide a lifeline to residents of Jennett’s Park and save them from driving out just for a few bits.” Residents have also praised Cllr Temperton’s perseverance in trying to get the ongoing issue solved.

Jennett’s Park resident Anna Bing said: “I feel very fortunate to have a councillor as wonderful as Mary Temperton.

“She is one of the most dedicated, community focused, selfless people I have ever met. She regularly goes door-to-door in the rain and so generously gives up her time to help others. She would be welcomed by the community to help give them confidence that there are people who are genuinely trying to help get the desired result.” Jennett’s Park resident Crisi Gibson also vented her frustrations over the delays.

She said: “I have said it before I’ll say it again: at this point I would be happy with a cow! Having to load the kids up just to get some milk is such a pain, especially given that this development was marketed as somewhere that would have shops, doctors, leisure, everything that a young family would need.

“It’s been seven years and we have the wonderful school and community centre but by no means all that we were promised.” Persimmon Homes and Redrow Homes said they hope the shop will open early next year.

In a statement, the firms said: “It was in October 2014 that we were delighted to announce that a contract had been signed for the retail element at Jennett’s Park, and we are in the process of preparing detailed construction drawings for the building and accompanying residential dwellings.

“We anticipate starting work on site in the spring or early summer this year, with the new store opening early 2016, seeing the creation of 20 new jobs.”
