Frances Norris was rushed to hospital from Birdsgrove Nursing Home in Warfield Road, Priestwood, on February 5, but died three days later.

The incident comes just eight days after another resident died when part of the ceiling of her room collapsed on to her in the early morning of Monday, January 12. Florence Knight, 86, was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital where she later died.

The two incidents are not being linked, but a joint investigation into both deaths at the care home has been launched by Thames Valley Police, Bracknell Forest Council, the Health and Safety Executive and the Care Quality Commission.

DS Richard Johnson said: “We are working jointly with them to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

“The deaths are being treated as unexplained at this time, and it is important to stress that although they both involve residents of Birdsgrove Nursing Home, we are not currently linking them.

“Measures have been taken to ensure there are no risks to other residents and anyone with concerns should contact Bracknell Forest Council or Thames Valley Police on 101, quoting URN 675 of 15/2.” Catherine Morrow, a spokesman for South Central Ambulance, confirmed that Mrs Norris was taken to hospital.

She said: “We were called at 19.45 to reports of a person with sustained burns to the leg. We sent one ambulance to the scene. The patient went to Frimley Park Hospital.” Raj Gokhool, operational manager at Aster Healthcare, which owns Birdsgrove Nursing Home, said: “On February 5, 2015, two members of staff were in the process of giving a bath to a resident.

“Unfortunately, the resident was subject to some burns above the ankles. The GP was called and the appropriate actions were taken.

“The police is currently investigating the incident.” The nursing home has 76 single rooms and two double rooms. Birdsgrove provides 24-hour care for the elderly and has a self-contained dementia care unit with 20 beds.

The nursing home was given a good report when it was last inspected by the Care Quality Commission in 2013, having previously been given a warning over inadequate patient nutrition and dehydration as well as staff training.
