Brakenhale School, in Easthampstead, has been granted £280,000 by Bracknell Forest Council following a meeting of its schools forum last Thursday.

The Rectory Lane school was judged to “require improvement” following an Ofsted inspection in March last year and, in a subsequent monitoring visit last July, it was deemed not enough effective action was being undertaken by its leaders to address the school’s priorities.

Inspectors found issues with inconsistent marking, low-level disruption by pupils and poor lesson planning.

With previous head teacher Paul Salter taking early retirement in September, Edgbarrow School’s headteacher Bob Elsey was appointed as executive head teacher at the school to action the issues highlighted in the report.

He is expected to carry on for the rest of the school year, with a more permanent replacement hoped to be appointed in time for the new school year in September.

The cash will go towards improving senior and middle leadership at the school, as well as giving teacher and governance support.

A part-time head of maths and additional part-time English support staff will also be hired until the end of the school year.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Elsey said: “This is a very solid start to helping this school turn itself around. This is not a quick fix, this is a strategy that we will have to work very hard at to achieve.

“I see teachers working their socks off and a lot of commitment to making this school better.” The school’s chairman of governors, Andrew Young, added at the meeting: “I have been chairman of the school’s governors for about 10 years now and I have to say there has been a mix of elements that have impacted on the school recently.

“We have got an opportunity now to get the right leadership in place so we can give our enthusiastic staff the right support and guidance to go forward.”
