South Central Ambulance Service was called to the Birdsgrove Nursing Home in Warfield Road, Warfield, at 5.43am on Monday, January 12.

A spokeswoman said: “We were called to reports of a ceiling collapse at an address in Warfield Road in Bracknell. We sent an ambulance to the scene who took one patient to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.” Raj Gokhool, operational manager at Aster Healthcare, who own Birdsgrove nursing home, said: “We have yet to find out the reasons for the sudden collapse of part of the plastering from the ceiling, but we believe it was an event outside of our control and nothing could have been done to foresee or prevent this.

“At all times following this accident, our priority was to ensure that our resident received the medical attention she required without delay.

“We are fully committed to providing a service that prioritises the health, safety and welfare of the people who live at our home. We have also taken the appropriate steps to ensure that those concerned have been informed accordingly, including the senior safeguarding team, the Care Quality Commission and the Health and Safety Executive.” The nursing home has 76 single rooms and two double rooms. Birdsgrove provides 24-hour care for the elderly and has a self-contained dementia care unit with 20 beds.

The nursing home was given a good report when it was last inspected in 2013, having previously been given a warning over inadequate patient nutrition and dehydration as well as staff training.
