Owlsmoor Primary School has applied to Bracknell Forest Council for planning permission for an extension, which would see it increase its capacity for pupils by 108 – from 522 youngsters to 630.

It proposes to add single-storey extensions to both the Key Stage One and key Stage Two buildings, while removing one of the modular classroom buildings and the nursery building.

The two extensions are earmarked for the western and eastern sides of the Key Stage One building and the northern side of the Key Stage Two building. The extension to the Key Stage One building will accommodate a nursery unit, three reception classes and seven standard classrooms.

The extension to the Key Stage Two building would accommodate four standard classrooms and a group room.

The school’s car park would also be enlarged, being boosted from 23 to 58 spaces, while spaces for bicycles will be increased from 14 to 40 spaces. The application is set to be decided by the council’s planning committee tomorrow night (Thursday), with it being recommended for approval by planning officers.

Owlsmoor Comm-unity Centre secretary Hazel Hawkes, raised one objection against the plans, saying the centre’s volunteers feared the new influx of pupils would see the centre’s car park act as an ‘overflow’ for parents during school rush hour times. She said: “The car park is used for the community centre and the adjoining doctors surgery.

“However we worry that due to the lack of space, parents will start using our car park to drop off and pick up their children during the school runs.

“Not only that, but it is quite dangerous for the children with cars coming in and out of the car park all the time. We do not have an objection to the school expanding, however.”
