Cllr Paul Bettison took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge last Wednesday, a charity challenge where an icy bucket of water is tipped over someone’s head.

After being nominated by his friend Douglas Judge, Mr Bettison’s daughter Claire poured two buckets of water over his head at their holiday home in the Isle of Man.

He in turn nominated Claire, as well as Bracknell Forest Council’s deputy leader Cllr Dale Birch, the leader of the Royal Borough Cllr David Burbage and friend Cosmo Curry.

Cllr Bettison also donated the standard £5 to the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association.

After taking the plunge, he said: “It was worse than getting smacked in the face with a wet fish. However, it’s a bit of fun and all for a good cause.

“I think it is quite nice to see people not taking themselves too seriously and it is great to see high-profile celebrities giving it a go too.

“It is good for the charity as they weren’t very well known before but I think they will have done very well off the back of this.” The craze was started by American-based Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Foundation, the American name for MND, back in July. The challenge has raised almost $100m for the charity and nearly £40m in the UK.

Staff at Warfield pub The New Leathern Bottle were also splashed for cash, with eight people taking on the challenge outside the pub on Friday.

Some even did it in fancy dress, wearing onesies, a tutu and a Ladies Day-style dress. Through sponsorship and donations they raised £150 for the MND Association.

Bar staff member Jane Grimshaw, who took part in the event, said: “The challenge was amazing. I was blown away by how much we raised and I am really proud of everyone that took part.

“It was good to get involved in the challenge but I was a bit worried by the amount of enjoyment the boys got out of tipping the water over our heads!” Have you taken part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge? Send us photographs and videos of your efforts to news@bracknellnews.co.uk
