Oliver Kent, of Great Hollands, is 20 years old and has global developmental delay – meaning he has significant limitations in communication and is unable to read or write.

While at Addington School in Woodley – a special needs school which specialises in music – he has developed a profound interest in DJing.

After his dad bought him some decks just over a year ago, his keen interest has turned into a passion, with him practising nearly every day.

Oliver also plays at gigs on a regular basis, performing at The Ark Trust’s Friday Night Project evening once a month and at the K2 centre at Kerith Community Church most weeks. Oliver said: “It is very good and I enjoy it a lot. I practise a lot at home and I would like to carry it on in the future. It’s my favourite thing to do.” However, he can only play at venues which already hold a music licence, as he does not hold one himself.

In order to broaden his horizons, Oliver needs to acquire both a digital licence and get his equipment PAT tested before he can become a fully-fledged DJ – which both together cost about £500.

He also needs a laptop to store all the music software and songs on for his gigs.

His mum Hazel Kent said: “It is absolutely amazing and it is great to see him doing something he thoroughly enjoys.

“I think he has found his calling in life. He really likes doing practical things so this has become ideal for him.

“I don’t know how he does it but he really loves it. He’d love it if he could get properly licensed, too, so he can carry on doing what he enjoys the most.” Mrs Kent believes one of the ways he can raise this money is to get sponsorship.
