WOKINGHAM’S successful debut in the Thames and Chilterns In Bloom competition has been celebrated.

It received a silver gilt award – the second highest honour behind gold – in its first year in the contest, and preparations are already in hand to go for gold in 2014.

A reception to celebrate this success was held at Wokingham Town Hall on Thursday, November 21, when residents and local groups that had supported the campaign with their horticultural displays were thanked by town mayor Cllr Martin Bishop.

Cllr Bishop said: “I have been so impressed by the enthusiasm and effort of so many people since we embarked upon our Bloom journey.” During the meeting, ideas were put forward for next year’s efforts for Thames and Chilterns In Bloom, when the theme will be wildlife and conservation. Suggestions include creating a butterfly garden; having bird boxes across town; helping water voles along Emm Brook and getting the new railway station involved in the scheme.

Mike Saynor of Holt Copse Conservation Volunteers said: “I encourage anyone who wants to be involved to contact the steering group without delay.” If you want to be involved in the Wokingham In Bloom initiative, email amenities@wokingham-tc.gov.uk
