The council, in conjunction with the Bracknell Regeneration Partnership (BRP), will reinstate artwork which was carefully removed from buildings in Crossway and Broadway before they were demolished.

Popular pieces which will be reinstated once the new town centre is complete include The Stag Head painting and the murals on Crossway House.

Cllr Iain McCracken, executive member for culture, corporate services and public protection, said: “We value all the artwork in Bracknell town centre as it is part of our borough’s history.

“Regrettably some of the artwork in the town centre cannot be retained as it is unsafe to remove or reuse.

The council has secured £200,000 for new pieces to be added to the town centre to replace what has been removed thanks to a planning agreement with BRP. Cllr McCracken said: “We have funds to provide new artwork so the new town centre embraces the legacy of the old town centre’s artwork but also provides fresh and modern pieces too.” Other pieces which will be returned to the town, or remain in place, include the fountain outside the Post Office, the Floating Ball in the High Street, and the mural above Mothercare.

Helen Barnett, marketing manager at BRP, said: “The only piece that we weren’t able to move was the frieze in Broadway but we were delighted to be able to preserve all other pieces of public art from Broadway and Crossway.

“It is important that the new town centre provides lots of visual stimulation as visitors relax in the series of open squares that will be created.”
