VISITORS to today's Bracknell Forest Careers Event will be able to find out about jobs, college or university courses and even try their hand at hairdressing.
There will be almost 100 exhibitors, made up of employers, training providers and voluntary organisations. The event will be held from 3.30-7.30pm at The Capitol Building, Oldbury Southern Industrial Area, Bracknell, and is free and open to everyone.
Nancy Lalor, operations manager at Learning to Work, formerly the East Berkshire Education Business Partnership, which is one of the organisations involved in the event, said: “We are really pleased with the business commitment as nearly 100 organisations have signed up to attend this year’s event.
“This will give young people and anyone looking for a change of career the chance to meet and hear first-hand about opportunities for employment, along with hearing what skills and qualities employers are looking for from their future workforce.”
Bracknell and Wokingham College will have demonstration areas, covering hairdressing, beauty, cabin crew training and media. Visitors can learn how to do a 'fishtail plait’ and 'spiral tonging’ on dolly heads, or a manicure, look after virtual reality babies and wear an empathy belly, or try newsreading or taking a portrait photograph.
Stephen King, head of faculty for courses for students aged 14–19 at the college, said: “We are pleased to once again be supporting the Bracknell Forest Careers Event as we believe it plays such an important part in helping Year 11 students from the area to make a decision about their next step after GCSEs in September 2014.
“All the courses we offer for 16-19 years olds will be represented in our demonstration area and the visitors from the local schools will be able to take part in practical demonstrations to give them an idea of what they can expect from our courses.”
Students from the college’s uniformed public services course will again be helping with the organisation and stewarding of the exhibition.
The careers event is organised by Bracknell Forest Partnership, which comprises Bracknell Forest Council and other authorities, plus is supported by businesses including Berkshire Media Group (publisher of the Midweek, First Buses, technology firm ITM and Sainsbury’s.
