Wokingham warned over fraudulent chargers

West Berkshire and Wokingham Trading Standards staff went undercover to buy eight chargers from newsagents and convenience stores across the two boroughs, and found more than half were unsafe because of poor construction, unsuitable insulation and oversized plug pins.
The faults could have caused an electric shock, triggered a fire and damaged mobile phones, and Trading Standards officers informed the retailers and removed the affected products from the shops.
Trading Standards manager Sean Murphy said “These often unbranded chargers are unlikely to have been subject to rigorous testing in order to comply with the British Standard. Manufacturers of official mobile phone chargers incur greater costs to carry out these tests which are reflected in their selling price. Our advice is to always buy from a reputable trader.”
