MEMORIES of the Blitz are explored in an art exhibition entitled Home Front in Bracknell town centre.

Work in the one-man show by artist Michael Garaway at Gallery@49, at 49 Broadway, in the town centre includes a three-dimensional piece called Descending A Staircase. This is inspired by his mother's description of smoke rolling down the staircase of her home when it caught fire during a bombing raid in Bristol in 1941.

Mr Garaway, from Lower Earley, said: "It's the notion of something quite frightening and quite traumatic in a sense and trying to process that in some way, using my own visual language and trying to make it applicable to current times." Mr Garaway, who lectures at the University of West London, is a member of artists' group ReOrsa, which manages Gallery@49.

He said: "I think it's brilliant having the gallery there.

"It's a great opportunity for people who maybe wouldn't want to travel so far as London or other centres where there are galleries and gives people a chance to connect with contemporary art in a more local setting.

"It's also good for artists to meet people as they come in and see what they think about the work." The work can be viewed through the windows until Saturday, August 4, but the gallery will be open for people to go inside and talk to Mr Garaway from noon-4pm tomorrow (Saturday). See www.reorsa.org
