A POLICE chief is celebrating completing his "year of pain" for charity.
Chief Inspector Simon Bowden, commander of Bracknell police, has completed 14 events in the past year including six half marathons, three cycle tours, three triathlons and two 5km runs.
Donations will be split equally between Help For Heroes and St Michael and St Mary Magdalene Church in Easthampstead.
He said: "I've finished my year of pain and I am exhausted! I've raised about £500 so far, but I'm hoping to raise £1,000."
The year kicked off with the Wokingham Half Marathon in February, but his programme was thrown off course when he shattered his scapula and dislocated his collar bone while cycling in Swinley Forest in March. He was forced to withdraw from the Reading and Bracknell half marathons, the Windsor Triathlon and the Caledonian Etape Cycle in Scotland.
After resting for a couple of months to recover, Ch Insp Bowden completed his next event in May, which was the 50 mile route of the Three Counties Cycle Ride in Bracknell.
He said: "This year has cost me some injuries; I have aching tendons. It has been a year of pain.
"The tour of the Black Mountains cycle ride in the Breacon Beacons was the hardest - 120 miles in the heat and that took seven hours." The other physical challenges he completed includes the AXLR8 triathlon at Crowthorne's Wellington College, the New Forest 100 mile cycle ride and the Maidenhead and Windsor half marathons.
He is now preparing for his next challenge - the London Marathon in April next year. To donate, visit www.charitygiving.co.uk/simonbowden
