CHILDREN found their way to a school's first orienteering day.

Lambrook School in Winkfield Row invited pupils from local primary schools to try out its new orienteering course and take part in a day of activities organised by the British Orienteering Association.

David Scott, head of geography at the prep school, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, said: "It was the first time we had had this event and it was really good, very successful."

The Year 5 and 6 pupils from seven schools were given maps and had to find their way around the playing fields and woodland surrounding historic Lambrook House to locate the orienteering symbols.

Ascot Heath Junior School completed the course in the fastest time and will compete in the county finals on March 29.

Mr Scott said: "I think all the competitors and volunteers really enjoyed having this event on our grounds."Mr Scott had approached the Association's development officer Denise Harper about developing an orienteering course and then worked with her on introducing the course and holding the schools' day on Tuesday [9] last week.

Mrs Harper, who also works for Bracknell Forest School Sports Partnership, said: "The grounds were a really lovely place to have the event and we are very grateful to the school."

Mrs Harper is also a member of the Berkshire Orienteers group, which organises family-friendly events.

The next will be near The Look Out in Nine Mile Ride, Bracknell on April 24.
