A GROUP that supports multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferers and their families in Wokingham has been recognised at a national awards ceremony.

The MS Society Reading, Wokingham and District group was one of three finalists at the MS Society Awards, held in London's County Hall on May 5.

Made up of volunteers, the Berkshire based society provides services and puts on activities to help people manage their condition and live independently.

They run a weekly seated exercise class and hydrotherapy session at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Rosmary Tocock MBE has volunteered with the MS Society for more than 30 years and got involved when her husband Peter was diagnosed with the condition.

The 64 year-old said: "My husband lived with MS for many years, and we received a lot of support from the MS Society when he was still alive.

"I’m very happy to give my time to support other people and families affected by MS.

"It’s always an honour to be here and to be recognised in this way. I may be the current chair, but this nomination is for all our group volunteers and members. We’re a team that works together to support people with MS.”

Although the effects of MS differ person to person, it is often painful and exhausting and can cause problems with how people walk, move, see, think and feel.

Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of the MS Society, said: “With over 100,000 people living with MS in the UK, the MS Society Awards are our way of celebrating and recognising the hard work and dedication of people who make a difference in the MS community.

“We are proud to have the Reading, Wokingham and District group as one of this year’s finalists.”
