THE town's most prominent entrepreneur who was recognised for his charitable acts in the community has died.

John Nike OBE passed away at the age of 81 on December 25 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital with his wife Sue by his side.

“It is with sadness that I have to announce that my husband John died peacefully on Christmas Day,” said Sue.

Mr Nike, originally from Devon, moved to Bracknell in 1964 and opened up a series of leisure centres in the United Kingdom, most notably the one named after himself in Amen Corner.

The John Nike Leisuresport Complex opened its doors in 1985 for dry ski sloping and, two years later was made available for ice skating where hockey side Bracknell Bees have played since.

He was honoured with the highest tribute the borough could bestow in September 2013 when he was made honorary Freeman of the Borough following his nomination by the authority leader.

At the time, Mr Nike said: “With all my years in Bracknell, I would like to remain a history of it, and this will ensure that.”

Other business ventures Mr Nike was involved in included the ownership of the four-star Coppid Beech Hotel, in John Nike Way and the four other ski slopes he owned in the country.

Over the years he always gave generously to good causes, one being the Multiple Sclerosis Society whom he donated thousands to.

He also owned basketball side the Thames Valley Tigers, who played at Bracknell Leisure Centre, before they folded in 2005 after funding problems.

More as we get it.
