A DISABLED sports fan from Bracknell has hit out at unfit football venues, as she is forced to sit away from family and friends in live sporting events.

Vicky Dennis, a wheelchair user from Forest Park in Bracknell, is part of the Muscular Dystrophy UK 'Move the Goalposts' campaign which fights for better facilities and access for disabled sports fans.

A survey has revealed that more than 50 per cent of fans are forced to sit in unsheltered seating, away from family and friends.

The study also shows that they feel disadvantaged by the ticket booking system and fear sitting with opposing fans due to lack of disabled seating. Vicky Dennis, 32, said: “I have to sit away from family and friends, as most venues only allow you to take one person with you. “Because of this I can never sit in a big group and have a proper day out, which is a bit rubbish.”

The campaign is fighting for better access at sporting venues, wheelchairs users to have a choice to sit in bigger groups, more parking spaces for disabled fans and accessible toilets.

She added: “At some stadiums, the seating for disabled fans is directly behind the goal, which I find to be quite dangerous because when the ball comes over the barriers, I can't stop it. “I find it quite daunting to be there.”

While her experience at the Reading Madejski Stadium has been good, Vicky Dennis said: “Venues are so hit and miss that it could be either positive, or complete disaster and a waste of money. I have been forced to sit in the pouring rain with an obscured view of the pitch “It is shocking that in this day and age, disabled people are at such a disadvantage just for following our passion.”
