THE life of a woman who lost her fight against in cancer in July will be celebrated at a charity ice hockey match held in her honour this August.

Jan Kneller made "no secret" of wanting to beat breast cancer and now friends and family plan to raise as much money as possible for Breast Cancer UK and Thames Hospice two months on from her death.

A charity ice hockey match featuring Bracknell Bees players from the past and present will be held at John Nike Ice Rink on August 27, all in memory of ice hockey fan Jan whose husband Del Kneller is the current manager of the Bracknell Hornets.

He said: "Everyone has said it didn't seem to matter what my wife was going through, even she she was going through hell herself, she always had time for other people.

"She had this thing that anyone who wanted to play hockey for Bracknell should be able to so we supported a lot of younger players. She loved the club so to have a match played in her name is phenomenal."

Caroline Reynolds, a close friend of Jan, has helped organise the charity evening and said: "It's massively important. Jan made no secret of not wanting to go, she put up such a brave battle and I told her we would try to raise as much as we can.

"There's so many types of cancer that so many people are affected by, it's a terrible disease. Everyone knows somebody who is affected by some kind of cancer."

With doors open from 5.15pm, families can look forward to a full ice hockey match as well as face painting, chuck-a-puck games, shirt auctions and a raffle.

"It's a family event and will be a good taster for people that haven't been to an ice hockey match before," Caroline said.

The event is free to enter with the option of contributing a voluntary donation to the two charities, Breast Cancer UK and Thames Hospice, at the John Nike Ice Rink on Saturday, August 27 from 5.15pm onwards.

The ice hockey match kicks off at 6pm.
