A TWO-year-old girl who passed away after battling a rare genetic condition has inspired a fundraising dog show in support of the hospice that cared for her.

The family of young Skyla Elizabeth will hold a fun day and dog show in the grounds of Wellington College to support the Alexander Devine Hospice who supported the family throughout Skyla's illness up to her death in October 2015 aged two years and five months.

Speaking of her loss, mum Corrine Harrison said: "Even though we had many a bad times with recurrent chest infections we also had many lovely trips out. After I found out it was life limiting we made the most of every moment.

"Even though she lost her ability to smile her eyes told me everything I needed to know. I will never forget the pain in her eyes from just simply breathing sometimes but likewise I will never forget the smile in her eyes when she was breathing well and enjoying the fresh air on her face. She may not have been grinning but her beautiful face was smiling. That face that kept me fighting for her for so long."

The closest children's hospice for Skyla was Helen House in Oxford, where the family stayed for the last eight days of Skyla's life.

Ms Harrison said: "All the medical equipment was stripped away and other than managing her morphine for the pain they let us just be mum and dad to our little girl. I can’t explain the importance of having this hospice available to us the people there were like real life angels and the whole place was like we were in heaven ourselves, I couldn’t have imagined spending our last days with Skyla in a better place, it was nothing like I had previously imagined, we have more happy memories there than we probably would have had at home.

"Since then we have been overwhelmed with the support we have had from people and I would love to give something back but honestly don’t know how anything could compare."

The family hope to give something back by raising money through the dog show and fun day with prizes up for grabs and a host of food and entertainment stalls, all organised by Kayla Harrison, owner of dog salon 2 Left Paws in Crowthorne.

The fun day and dog show kicks off in the morning of Sunday, August 28 in the grounds of Wellington College.
