A CHARITY campaigner will embark on an ambitious 100-mile trip from Wokingham to Weymouth on his mobility scooter, but needs your help to get there.

Colin Antink, 24, who was this year honoured with a Wokingham town council civic award for his volunteering efforts, will take on the mammoth expedition in aid of Thames Hospice – whose shop in Wokingham he used to help at before he was forced to give it up because of his aches and pains.

Colin – a regular columnist for our sister paper the News – suffers from Stickler Syndrome, a rare hereditary condition impacting eyesight, hearing and joints.

Last year he raised £780 for the charity – which cares for adults with life-limiting illnesses across East Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire – by getting its logo tattooed on his left arm.

Colin is determined to take on the challenge on Friday, September 16, but needs a chaperone to help him navigate his way to Weymouth.

He said: “It is all in place, bar one problem, the guy who was going to do the ‘scouting’ for me, no longer can.

“In an ideal world I would like to take the drive down to Weymouth by car with someone first so I can get a closer look at the roundabouts, as I will then need someone to actually lead me across them with their hazards on.

“I will have a huge notice on the back of my scooter to tell folk what I am doing and I think I have plotted the route in the most scenic way.

“The charity has said it is informing Thames Valley Police at each town that I will be coming so they can watch for me and any problems and I believe I would just need someone to do the route each day to watch for me to be sure I don’t hit trouble!”

The trip is expected to take around a week, with Colin planning on staying at budget hotels en route, before enjoying a mini-break in Weymouth with his mum Lynne and Aunt Bo and then hiring a van to transport the scooter back to his home in Wokingham.

Colin’s scooter can average  nine and half miles per hour.

Can you help Colin with his fundraising efforts?
