BRACKNELL’S roads have been named and shamed as needing more repair work than nearly anywhere else in the country.

Figures published by the government last week say that nearly one in 10 main roads across the borough should be repaired.

The figures show some nine per cent of the main across the borough need some form of refreshment, the joint fifth highest in the country.

Some seven per cent of the borough’s B and C roads also should be considered for maintenance.

The national average is four percent for A roads and seven per cent for B and C roads.

Cllr Chris Turrell, executive member for highways on Bracknell Forest Council said the figures were reported to Westminster in April 2015 and this year’s figures would be much lower.

“My understanding is we will be reporting lower figures this year, roughly three and four per cent respectively.

“We have to keep making the point to the government that we look after our roads.

“We take safety very seriously and anything relating to that will be done very quickly but cosmetic repairs may have to wait.

“We put those figures into the government and we look to see what funding we can get.

“Currently there’s nothing there that impacts safety. We do keep a careful eye on that through our own inspections and reports from members of the public.”

The government figures, released on Thursday, March 24 show Bracknell scores as the worst borough in Berkshire with five per cent of A roads in the borough should be considered for maintenance whilst Slough has only two per cent of A roads in need of maintenance.

In Wokingham Borough the proportion of B and C roads where maintenance should be considered is seven per cent whist Slough again has the best figure in Berkshire of two per cent.
