MYSTERY surrounds the discovery of a man's body in a Bracknell playground this morning.

South Hill Road was closed by police around 8am this morning after the body of a man, who has not yet been identified, was found near the swings in the South Hill Park playground causing chaos on the town's roads during the morning rush hour.

Police were first called to the scene at 6.12am following reports of an 'unexplained death' and forensic teams spent the morning combing the playground and surrounding woodland for evidence.

Little information about how or when the man died has been given out by police.

A delay in blocking off the road meant some dog walkers saw the body before it had been covered, however a blue tent was erected later in the morning and more than ten police officers remained at the scene advising members of the public to avoid the area.

Chief Inspector Dave Gilbert, local police commander for Bracknell Forest said: "This morning at approximately 6.30 we were called to an incident at South Hill Park where an adult male body had been located.

"At this time we are unsure of the circumstances around the death and we are treating it as an unexplained death and a full investigation is ongoing.

"As I'm sure you're all aware thre's a lot of disruption in the area and I apologise for this. However, I will endevour to keep you as updated as possible and we will aim to return to normality as soon as possible within that area.

"If anyone has any information regarding this incident then I'd encourage you to let us know as soon as possible."

A man from nearby Easthampstead Baptist Church said the road still hadn't been blocked off when he arrived for work.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: "I got here at quarter to eight and it wasn't there but by 8.10 they'd put it all up."

South Hill Road, one of the main routes to the south of the town, was closed in both directions from the Golden Farmer pub to the Reed's Hill and Haversham Drive junctions.

A diversion route directed cars along Mill Lane, Downshire Way and  Bagshot Road.

Bracknell Town Council, who own and manage the land and playpark, said the police had not given them any information about the investigation while neighbours and businesses were also in the dark.

The recreation ground nearby, containing North Lake, is popular with dog walkers and families.

The nearby South Hill Park mansion remained open as usual throughout the morning.
