Things were bound to get a bit crackers as biscuit week hit the Great British Bake Off tent this week.

Our lovable Bracknell baker, Alvin Magallanes, who The Independent have dubbed "the cutest baker since Howard from series 4", got off to a good start with his jackfruit, pistachio and macadamia biscotti.

Perfectly even, they were just a little bit soft in the middle but with an extra five minutes, would have been "perfect" in Paul Hollywood's eyes.

In the technical challenge to bake eight Arlettes, a French cinnamon-flavoured palmier biscuit, commonly known as a crunchy croissant cookie, the heat of the kitchen got a bit much for the Heatherwood Hospital nurse.

Having rolled the dough up the wrong way, the baked biscuits were flaky and some did not have enough cinnamon, leaving him in sixth place.

But it was the showstopper challenge where things began to crumble for Alvin, when time got the better of him and he unable to put together his gingerbread casket, though his brandy snaps that were to go inside, went down a treat.

To see whether Alvin rises to the challenge in bread week tune in to next week's episode on Wednesday at 8pm on BBC1.
