Jamie Raven, 31, impressed celebrity judges Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and David Walliams, and the 3,000-strong audience, when he turned a £50 note into a ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ bank note and then repeated the trick so all four judges had one to keep.

He followed this up with a card trick that ended in a flip book-style reveal. The magician then picked a card Simon had chosen at random, out of a hat, on the last go.

Since his audition, which took place at the Dominion Theatre in London in February, aired on ITV1 on Saturday night, he has become an internet phenomenon, garnering more than one million views on YouTube.

Jamie, who has been practising magic tricks for about 20 years, admits he has been blown away by the support he has received and admits he is already getting noticed in the street.

He said: “It has been unbelievable really. I am absolutely thrilled and the amount of lovely comments I have had since my audition on TV has been amazing. I want to say thank you to everyone for their support. I was terrified of making a mistake but I was more excited to go out on stage than nervous.

“I went out for a walk around Ascot Racecourse and the town the day after it aired and I had a couple of people come up to me saying things like ‘well done’ and ‘congratulations’, which is really nice.” Jamie hopes the audition will give him and other close-up magicians a chance to perform more on the big stage, in contrast to larger-scale magicians such as Darcy Oake, a contestant on last year’s Britain’s Got Talent.

He added: “Even though Simon has a reputation for not being the biggest fan of magic, I don’t entirely agree with that.

“I think magic is a little like music; he will like some music but not others and I think you can say the same for magic. Simon just hadn’t found many magic acts he enjoyed.

“I had the camera on me to project the video onto the stage behind me, so I could get the audience involved and make them feel part of it. I was absolutely amazed to get a standing ovation at the end.” The magician, originally from Hammersmith, is yet to learn whether he has made the semi-finals of the show, adding that he will find out once the audition stage is over.
