Elderly Ascot folk who had no hot water for a week are offered fish and chips suffer as compensation

ELDERLY residents have poured scorn over the offer of a fish and chip supper as compensation for being without hot water for a week.

People living in Crown Hill Court, sheltered accomodation based in South Ascot, which is owned and operated by Radian, were without hot water and heating from Saturday, May 17, to Friday, May 23.

Both occupants and relatives raised concerns about the situation, which left many residents without suitable washing or cleaning facilities.

However the offer of a fish and chip meal as compensation for the inconvenience did not go down well with residents.

Resident Joy Billings, 89, said: “I think that form of compensation is an insult to us. The meal is not going to cost them very much and I think it shows exactly how they feel about us.

“What’s more important than the compensation and money is a proper emergency call-out service so we don’t have to wait as long next time. We want them to know how we were suffering during that week.”

Trevor Knight, whose mother Jean Knight is a resident at Crown Hill Court, added that he thought the compensation offer was not enough.

He said: “For people living there who are elderly they are very vulnerable when things like hot water are unavailable to them.

“It seems to me as if Radian aren’t up to the job to be honest and I don’t think this compensation is enough.”

The housing association said the communal boiler was broken due to an electrical fault and offered the supper as a goodwill gesture to residents.

In a statement, Radian said: “It is our normal policy to pay compensation to residents via a credit to their service charges for heating where this has not been provided. As is usual for utility services, residents are charged based on usage.

“We have recently changed our providers and although, they have recently broken down, the boilers at Crown Hill Court are quite new and are more efficient than the previous ones.

“These two factors mean that residents are not being charged for heating at present, and so as a gesture of goodwill we offered them a supper.

“Radian and our sub-contractors have a number of qualified engineers available to respond out of hours where needed.”
