CHARITIES have benefited from a village’s carnival capers.

Ascot District Day Centre trustee Elvira Fletcher, pictured second right, receives a cheque for £750 from Sunningdale Area Carnival committee members Melanie Trapnell, Julian Sharpe and the Rev David Uffindell. This was part of the proceeds from last year.

Some £1,750 was raised at the annual Sunningdale Area Carnival last year, with cheques being handed out to three charities at a presentation on Saturday.

Ascot District Day Centre, a community centre for the elderly, benefited with a cheque for £750.

Two other charities also received money – £500 was given to Bracknell Foodbank and £500 to Slough-based Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service.

Meanwhile, superheroes are needed to help mark the anniversary of the First World War at the village carnival this year.

The event will be held on Sunday, September 14, with the theme being heroes.

There will be a fancy dress competition for youngsters to disguise themselves as their favourite hero or superhero. The carnival’s committee is also looking for nominations for local unsung heroes to honour at a presentation at this year’s carnival.

Julian Sharpe, co-chairman of the carnival, said: “We have had a number of nominations so far, and we would be pleased to have more.

“There will be a presentation at the carnival to say a public thank you to our unsung heroes.

“It could be someone who helps in the community, a child who perhaps helps care for a sibling or their parents, or someone who serves in their line of work such as a firefighter.”

To nominate a local hero, or to find out more about the carnival, visit or call Mr Sharpe on 01344 625109.
