A MAN who climbed onto the roof of Ascot Racecourse yesterday evening has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Police were called to the High Street racecourse at about 6.30pm after receiving reports of a man on the roof of the main grandstand building.

Racecourse staff and police safely coaxed the man down from the roof at about 7.15pm after spending nearly an hour there.

Nick Smith, head of communications at the racecourse, said: "It was resolved by our chief operator and his staff who worked very calmly and sensibly with the person and managed to coax him down."
