Ascot dad to get on his bike for charity ride

A FATHER who battled back from cancer is competing in a gruelling bike ride to give something back to a charity which has supported him and his family.

Matthew Glover with his wife Lisa and 17-month-old son Jake.

Matthew Glover, from North Ascot, was diagnosed with testicular cancer last September but managed to catch it early and was given the all-clear in early December.

Now he is taking on the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100 in August – a 100-mile circular bike ride that goes from London to Surrey, before heading back to London for the finish line at The Mall.

The 30-year-old father-of-one is doing the event to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, after he was helped by the charity during his treatment.

He is also supporting his father, who is currently battling the disease, and in memory of his wife Lisa's aunt, who passed away in December.

“I had been thinking about doing something like this for a while,” he said.

“I haven’t ridden a bike for about 15 years so it’s going to be a test. I got accepted onto the race last Thursday and it has all happened so fast that I still actually need to buy a bike!

“I just wanted to give something back to the charity after all they have done. They were there for me and they are there for my father and Lisa’s aunt.

“I have been very lucky myself and I was very relieved after I got the all-clear.”

He hoped this fundraiser would be the first of many, and has plans to tackle the London to Brighton bike ride event next year.

He added: “I want to help my family as much as I can.

“Hopefully I can do more of these sorts of fundraisers to try and raise as much money for the cause as possible.”

His wife Lisa is also organising a raffle to raise further cash for the charity. She is gathering raffle prizes and deciding on a date.

Mr Glover is hoping to raise £750 for Macmillan, and by the time the News went to press he had raised £325. To donate visit www.justgiving.com/Matthew-Glover2
