Contribution of service personnel recognised on Armed Forces Day

Runnymede Borough Council showed its support with a short ceremony on Monday attended by about 30 people.
Chief executive, Paul Turrell, Mayor of Runnymede, Yvonna Lay, Neighbourhood Inspector Roger Nield and Captain Paul Samways of 94 BY Signal Squadron were among the group outside the Civic Centre.
Mr Turrell said: "Runnymede Council has raised the Armed Forces flag to show our support for the service men and women who have made such a significant contribution to our country by serving or having served in the Armed Forces."
Captain Samways added: "As our service personnel withdraw from Afghanistan there will be many service men and women who require assistance from their local communities whether it be through injury or settling into a new career.
"It gives our service personnel great encouragement to know that borough councils such as Runnymede support them and assist them wherever possible."
Surrey County Council chairman Cllr David Munro hosted a flag raising ceremony at County Hall in Kingston, dedicated to the brave men and women of Britain's armed forces past and present.
Representatives from Surrey Royal British Legion and Surrey Cadet Force were among the guests on Monday.
Cllr Munro said: "The defence of this country, its people and their interests is fundamental to our wellbeing and prosperity, so those who assume the responsibility of delivering it take on a vital and sometimes daunting challenge."
Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for the nation to show its support for men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. See www.armedforcesday.org.uk
