Ascot United's nine-hour wasted trip
PLAYERS and supporters Ascot United FC were left frustrated on Saturday following a wasted nine-hour round trip to the Isle of Wight when the match was called off late on.
A group of about 60 left Ascot at 8.30am, having been assured that the FA Vase fourth round game against Newport was on and arrived at 1pm, only for the match to be called off 90 minutes before kick off due to a waterlogged pitch.
Referee Mark Pottage called off the game, deeming the pitch 'unplayable' and unsafe for the players.
Steve Brine, of Ascot United, who made his own way to the game with his wife and daughter, said: "I think because there had been such a fuss and upbeat vibe about the club leading up to the game, that everyone connected to Ascot just felt so deflated and questioned how this situation had happened."
The tie has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 16, and is due to be moved to Ascot's home ground as the pitches on the Isle of Wight were deemed unplayable. However, the FA has yet to confirm this.
