A WOMAN and a baby had a "lucky escape" this morning when a car careered into the front of a single-storey maisonette, trapping them in the bedroom.

Firefighters from Bracknell, Egham and Camberley stations - alongside police and paramedics - rushed to the detached annex in London Road, Ascot, at 7.45am to find a Land Rover had ploughed into the property, transforming the walls into a pile of rubble.

Firefighter Graham Betts, from Egham fire station, said: "There was quite a lot of damage to the house and the vehicle was three-quarters of the way into the room.

"We were just glad to get the woman and baby out really."

The crews spent nearly two hours clearing the debris to rescue the woman, believed to be in her late 40s, and a three-week-old baby.

It is thought they were in shock but their injuries were minor - however they were taken to hospital as a precaution.

PC Nick Burke on the scene, told the News: "Talking to neighbours, speed probably was involved but unfortunately there were no witnesses, so anything I say would be a guess.

"The woman and baby were very very lucky, fortunately they escaped with just cuts and bruises."

A heavy rescue unit from Dee Road fire station also attended and a clean-up crew is still on scene.

The condition of the driver is unknown.
