TWELVE arrests were made yesterday on the fourth day of Royal Ascot.

It was the busiest day so far for police with 22 reported crimes, but officers insist crime remains lower than last year.

Police arrested a man on suspicion of theft, two men on suspicion of passing counterfeit currency and there were three arrests for assault.

Two men were also arrested on suspicion of drug possession and there were four public order offences.

Meanwhile British Transport Police arrested two people for being drunk and disorderly, two people for public order offences and one for trespassing.

Superintendent Andy Standen said: "Although yesterday was busier than the previous days we are very pleased with how Royal Ascot has gone so far and crime is still lower than last year."

More than 77,000 people are expected to attend the final day of racing today and Supt Standen

urged people to drink responsibly and avoid buying tickets from touts. He added: "We will continue to do all that we can to ensure that the day is safe and enjoyable for everyone.

"Following the arrests made yesterday which were linked to the night time economy, we will continue to work with local licensees to prevent any incidents.

He added: "We have been working hard to prevent touts operating in the area and if you buy a ticket from one you could spend a lot of money and not be allowed entry to the racecourse."
