POLICE have pledged a 'substantial' presence at Royal Ascot this week to ensure the safety of The Queen and royal family and the general smooth running of the event.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) is working with Ascot Racecourse Limited, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Metropolitan Police Service, British Transport Police and other agencies to oversee the race meeting that begins today (Tuesday) and lasts until Saturday.

Superintendent Andy Standen, the senior police commander at the event, said: "TVP is proud to be policing this annual event, which attracts around 300,000 race-goers over the week and is attended by Her Majesty the Queen and other senior members of the Royal Family.

"A lot of preparation has gone into making sure that the event passes off as smoothly as possible, working in partnership with Ascot Racecourse Limited, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and neighbouring police Forces.

"To assist with the organisers' traffic management plan this year, the usual drop off lay-by for race goers has been moved from Ascot High Street to 'car park 4' in Station Hill, which will be signposted. There will also be no waiting or u-turns allowed in the High Street."

There will be a tried-and-tested one-way traffic system around Ascot Racecourse at specified times, with car and coach parking signposted.

The police will use Bluetooth equipment to send text messages to the public to encourage people to drink sensibly and keep their valuables safe.

They will also post regular updates for race-goers and residents using Twitter (thamesvp).
